A marriage certificate is the official government proof that your marriage exists in law. Even if you have already had a wedding — a Hindu ceremony, an Arya Samaj vivah, a Nikah or a temple marriage — that ceremony alone is not enough for legal and official purposes. The documents are straightforward: proof of the marriage (wedding invitation, photographs, or the priest, temple or Arya Samaj certificate), age and identity proof of both spouses, address proof, and two witnesses who attended the wedding. For older marriages an affidavit confirming the date and place of marriage is usually added.
